Saturday Night Live

As the name speaks, Saturday Night Live is an extremely popular weekly late night comedy show in US featuring several short skits, parodies of television commercials, a live guest band, and a pop-cultural guest host each week. Created by Lorne Michaels, it had made its first airing on October 11, 1975. Today, SNL has already seen 35 summers and is one of the longest-running network programs in American television history. With this amount of public demand, SNL has decided to relive the very first episode on Saturday, September 26, 2009. Though, the show is broadcast live all over North America in the Central and Eastern Time zones, compilations of various episodes in DVD are selling like hot cakes all over the world. In total, it’s a complete package of humor, reality and fun.

Saturday Night Live plot

Since it is a reality based show filmed in the city of New York, this show right from its onset doesn’t have any serious and traditional plot based story like other prime time shows. This program features a regular cast of comedy actors commonly joined by new guests, musical bands which aims at humor, witty in parts and makes fun of some of the idiots who run the country of America. Each week’s show also offers two musical numbers from someone at, or aspiring to, the top of the charts. So, if you are the kind of guy or girl who likes political humor and can digest cheap jokes at times, Saturday Night Live is just the show for you. The skits are generally so very hilarious that you can’t help yourself falling off the floor, laughing.

Saturday Night Live Characteristics

Though this show has regular anchors (basically, comedians) to perform for seasons, with the passage of time and changes, it is bound for the producers to keep replacing them with new hosts. All cast members in this are expected to write as well as perform. Cast members who have left a memorable legacy on the show often have been the subject of a Best of SNL videotape, DVD, or compilation special. To name a few legends in this field, there have been such heavy hitters as Jane Curtin, Eddie Murphy, Chevy Chase, Bill Murray, Mike Myers and others in seasons past.
This famous show has helped most of the cast members to shoot to fame, many of which are now-famous actors and actresses. And behind the scenes, lies the hard work of the comedy writers who are grouped into The Groundlings and The Second City, and the Harvard Lampoon.

The Groundlings are the ones who perform humorous acts vividly impersonating characters. The Second City takes care of the behavioral details of characters and their punch lines. The Lampoon emphasizes the conceptual premise of the character and overall show. The three gel together to form a show that may be easily termed as one of the most hilarious shows on television.

SNL is a thoroughly entertaining show mostly to attract the high-school and college generation, and as tastes evolve through generations, the show wonderfully adapts itself in stride. The show teases any young mind providing a scathing satirical look at the politics that rocked their world, completely wrapping itself in fun. It’s an inherent condition of sketch comedy – material is always topical and evolves with the generations.
