Avatar - the last air bender created an anime-style show that appeals to both kids and adults. The show follows the exploits of a whimsical hero named Aang – the Avatar – who has been tasked with the lofty challenge of battling an entire nation of enemies and restoring piece to a war-torn land. Aang is an Air bender, which means that he can manipulate air itself to fly, send wind tunnels at foes, and so on. But the young warrior will only be able to best the menacing threat of the Fire Nation once he has also learned the intricacies of Fire, Water and Earth bending, too. For only the Avatar is able to harness the power of all four elements.

Avatar characters

The main characters in the Avatar are Aang, Katara, Haru, and Sokka. Aang is the fun-loving, 12-year-old protagonist in the series. He is the current incarnation of the Avatar, the spirit of the planet manifested in human form. As the Avatar, Aang must master all four elements to bring peace to the world and restore the balance between the four nations. Aiding him is the fourteen-year-old Katara, the sole remaining Water bender of the Southern Water Tribe, and her brother Sokka, a 15-year-old warrior of the Southern Water Tribe. The Water benders rely on Chi, the ancient Chinese notion of a vital life force that is inherent in all things. Water benders can manipulate water, turning it to ice or controlling its movement in many ways.

Haru is a young Earth bender who helps the gang in their mission to save a missing friend. The Earth benders can manipulate the earth, using dirt, rocks, and other ground matter which moves at their will. The Earth Kingdom is quite large, and if the Fire Nation defeats the Earth nation, all hope will be lost.

They derive their energy from the sun and the earth’s core, and the Fire benders harnessed the power of a passing comet when they launched their attack on the other nations. The Fire benders will try to take over the entire world, unless Aang can help the other nations to stop them.

Aang is the last Air bender. When the Fire Nation attacked, they wiped out the entire nation of Air Nomads. Only Aang remained, having been preserved in an iceberg. Air benders are peaceful, and only use fighting as a last resort. Air bending allows the practitioner to use the air and wind to their advantage.

Avatar plot

Avatar- the last air bender has an almost unprecedented intensity and complexity of plotline for a children’s animated show. The fantasy series truly takes kids to another world – a spiritual, magical world in which each chapter episode carries the viewer deeper into the compelling saga. Along with the added story and character depth, however, the series also contains a higher level of mature content than some other children’s TV shows.

The show has a martial arts theme; there are many fights – both hand-to-hand battles and fights involving various weapons such as swords and knives. The fighting scenes are animated, and no blood/gore is shown, but some of the scenes are intense and the main characters often find themselves in situations of peril involving armed enemies.

Avatar ratings

According to Nickelodeon, the show is most popular among boys ages 9-14. In comparing the series with the alternative television choices of kids in this age group, Avatar- the last air bender presents an exciting, suspenseful and interesting show that is relatively clean.
